What is Osteopathy?

os·te·op·a·thy

a branch of medical practice that emphasizes the treatment of medical disorders through the manipulation and massage of the bones, joints, and muscles.

Osteopathy is a form of manual medicine that focuses on total body health. It treats the structural and functional mechanics of the body, which include the joints, muscles, and spine. Osteopathy is a form of treatment for a wide range of medical conditions. Osteopathy seeks to find the root cause of pain. We often see that a problem or previous injury in one part of the body can manifest itself in another. Therefore, an Osteopathic assessment involves treating the body as a whole and not just the specific location of the pain.  The principles are based on all parts of the body functioning together in an integrated manner. If one part of the body is restricted, then the rest of the body must adapt and compensate for this, eventually leading to inflammation, pain, stiffness and other health conditions. Osteopathic Treatment works by freeing the body of the restrictions in movement that cause pain. Osteopathic treatment provides the body with the opportunity to heal itself by increasing mobility, reducing stress and minimizing pain.

Osteopaths have a highly developed sense of touch, coupled with extensive training in anatomy, physiology, biomechanics and neurology.

As a result of the high professional standards Osteopaths are required to meet, Osteopathy is a safe and non-invasive treatment option for people of all ages.

Some of the most common complaints that bring patients in for Osteopathic care include low back and pelvic dysfunctions, sports injuries, headaches, digestive concerns, postural correction, birth and labour trauma, chronic or generalized pain from joints, soft tissues, and other sources.
